Travel itinerary

Departure from Carrasco International Airport to Johannesburg, with a connection in São Paulo.

Arrival in Johannesburg around midday. After checking in and resting, we may explore the surroundings of the hotel, including Nelson Mandela Square. In the evening we meet for dinner at the hotel restaurant.

We depart Johannesburg heading east, crossing the mining regions of Mpumalanga. Our journey follows historic trade routes toward the Lowveld and Kruger National Park. The afternoon is free to settle in and relax. Our lodge overlooks a stream where hippos often gather at night.

Early in the morning we enter Kruger National Park for a full-day safari. Home to the famous Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and rhino) and an incredible diversity of wildlife, including 336 tree species, 507 bird species, and 147 mammals. The safari is conducted in an open 4×4 vehicle, with a midday stop for lunch at one of the park’s designated rest areas.

Today we explore the famous Panorama Route, visiting Bourke’s Luck Potholes, The Three Rondavels, and God’s Window. This spectacular scenic route also offers insight into the fascinating and complex history of South Africa. In the afternoon we return to our accommodation.

Optional: Elephant Whispers experience with orphaned elephants.

We cross Kruger once again as we travel toward our next destination, continuing to spot wildlife along the way. Exiting through the southern gate, we cross the border into Eswatini. The road leads through mountains and forests into the Ezulwini Valley, near the capital Mbabane.

We begin the day with an incredible guided walking safari, exploring trails where wildlife can often be seen at close range. Later you may enjoy optional activities such as visiting a Swazi community, taking a sunset safari in the lion area, or simply relaxing and observing the wildlife gathering around the nearby lake.

Optional activities: Umphakatsi cultural experience, bird-watching walk, vehicle safari.

We re-enter South Africa and continue toward Zululand, , land of the legendary King Shaka. Arrival in St. Lucia, a small coastal town near the Indian Ocean, famous for the hippos that frequently wander through its streets at night.

Early morning safari in Hluhluwe–Imfolozi, one of the last strongholds of the white rhinoceros. This beautiful park offers another opportunity to observe the region’s remarkable wildlife.

In the afternoon we enjoy a sunset cruise on the estuary, where we can see numerous hippos and crocodiles.

We travel toward the Drakensberg Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the way we visit Howick Falls and the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, where we may enter the museum to learn more about this remarkable historical figure.

A full day exploring the Drakensberg Mountains on foot. We will enjoy several hiking options according to the group’s level, including the opportunity to see San rock art in Battles Cave.

We continue our journey through a mountain pass and visit a unique “vulture restaurant.” We pass through Golden Gate Highlands National Park, famous for its striking rock formations, and visit the Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre. Arrival at a traditional South African farm where we will stay overnight. In the evening we may enjoy stargazing.

We explore this 3,000-hectare farm,dedicated to Merino sheep, cattle, and local wildlife. Morning walk and guided visit to learn more about the lifestyle and traditions of the region.

Optional: Horseback riding, clay shooting, spa.

Travel across the semi-arid Karoo landscape to Graaff-Reinet, the fourth-oldest town in South Africa. Upon arrival we take a guided tour of this historic settlement.

Those interested may join an optional sunrise excursion to the Valley of Desolation, where dramatic rock formations overlook the town.

After breakfast we travel toward the coast through open plains to the Addo region. Free afternoon at our lodge along the Sundays River.

Optional: Sunrise tour to the Valley of Desolation.

A full day exploring Addo Elephant National Park, the third largest park in South Africa, famous for its large elephant population. We will enjoy a wildlife safari from our truck.

Optional: Open-vehicle safari with lunch.

Along the route we visit two famous coastal towns: Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) and Jeffreys Bay, renowned among surfers worldwide. We then continue to Tsitsikamma, gateway to the Garden Route.

The park offers kilometers of coastal trails. We will hike part of the Waterfall Trail of the famous Otter Trail. Those who prefer a gentler activity may explore Storms River, where the river meets the ocean between dramatic cliffs connected by suspension bridges.

Optional: Canopy Tours, Woodcutters Journey.

We visit Nature’s Valley, where we will have time to walk along the beach and enjoy the scenery. Later we continue to Knysna, where you may explore the town or take an optional boat cruise to the Knysna Heads.

On the way to Arniston we pass through Mossel Bay and see the historic Post Office Tree. Free time to explore the beach and walk to nearby caves depending on the tide. Our historic seaside hotel offers spectacular ocean views.

We visit Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa, with its historic lighthouse. Arrival in Hermanusknown worldwide for land-based whale watching. If we are lucky, we may hear the town crier announcing whale sightings. We also walk along the coast and visit Walker Bay Nature Reserve and the impressive Klipgat Caves.

Optional: Whale-watching boat cruise.

Free morning in Hermanus. Later we visit the African penguin colony at Stony Point and continue to Stellenbosch for a wine tasting at a local winery. Arrival in Cape Town, where we say goodbye to the truck that accompanied us throughout the journey.

Two free days to explore Cape Town at your own pace. You may visit the V&A Waterfront, take the hop-on hop-off bus, go up Table Mountain,. visit the aquarium, or take an excursion to the Cape Peninsula.

Only breakfast is included during these days.

Another free day to continue discovering this beautiful and cosmopolitan city.
Departure from Cape Town in the morning for a flight to Johannesburg, and from there back to Montevideo with a connection in São Paulo. Arrival at Carrasco International Airport in the early hours of the morning.
