In the morning, we take the train to Aguas Calientes. From there, we’ll ascend to the long-awaited citadel of Machu Picchu, where, accompanied by a local guide, we’ll tour the citadel, visiting its main sites. We’ll take the bus back to Aguas Calientes and take the train back to Ollantaytambo in the afternoon, where we’ll stay again.

A 21-day overland journey along ancient Inca trails, from northern Argentina and Chile through the Atacama Desert, we’ll cross the Andes to reach Cusco: the center of the Andean world. There, we’ll visit sacred Inca sites, including one of the seven wonders of the modern world: the citadel of Machu Picchu.
On our return from San Pedro de Atacama, on a 4-day, 3-night adventure through the colorful lagoons nestled in the Andes, we will visit the wonderful Salar de Uyuni, the largest and highest in the world.

Travel itinerary
We departed Montevideo at 4:00 a.m. from Tres Cruces, heading for the General San Martín Bridge, which connects the cities of Fray Bentos and Gualeguaychú. We traveled through the province of Entre Ríos toward its capital, Paraná. We then traveled through the Subfluvial Tunnel to reach the city of Santa Fe, capital of the province of the same name. We continued to the city of Ceres, where we stayed for a rest.
After breakfast, we continue along Route 34 and in Santiago del Estero connect with the iconic Route 9, which will take us to northern Argentina. We enter the Humahuaca Gorge to stay in Purmamarca. This charming town boasts a very distinctive landscape; its streets, valleys, mountains, and the Hill of Seven Colors are some of its most attractive features.
We resume our journey very early, ascending the Cuesta de Lipán, a fascinating route that delights us with its landscapes and leads us to Salinas Grandes. There, we will take a walk to get a closer look at the salt flats, appreciate their vastness, and better understand the economy that thrives there. Contemplating its varied landscapes, we will leave Argentina and enter Chile, our first crossing of the Andes Mountains. After a significant descent, we will arrive at the town of San Pedro de Atacama, where we will stay. This picturesque little town is considered the gateway to the Atacama Desert.
We wake up very early and travel 90 km to reach the El Tatio Geysers geothermal field to enjoy the sunrise, when it offers its best spectacle. There, we’ll have breakfast in the surrounding area with beautiful views. Then we’ll return to San Pedro de Atacama. Along the way, we’ll stop to admire the scenery and wildlife, and visit Machuca, a small mountain village with a very interesting history as a yareta town.
Then, in San Pedro de Atacama, we’ll have time to explore the surrounding area. In the afternoon, we can watch the sunset in the Valley of the Moon or explore the surrounding area by bike through the Devil’s Ravine (optional). At night, those who wish can visit an observatory with state-of-the-art telescopes to observe the wonderful desert sky and all the stars that embellish it (optional). We stayed here again.
We continue our journey through the city of Calama, home to the impressive Chuquicamata copper mine, one of the largest open-pit mines in the world. After a steep descent along Route 5, we’ll see a series of abandoned saltpeter works, extremely important for their time, as well as some ancient petroglyphs. Little by little, we’ll discover fertile, verdant valleys that will make the arid Atacama landscape more pleasant. We leave Chile and enter Peru, reaching the city of Tacna, the city of eternal spring, where we will stay.
We travel through Peruvian territory, passing through Moquegua, a large oasis in the Atacama Desert, capital of the department of the same name, distinguished by its traditional houses with thatched roofs. We continue to Puno, the main university city located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, where we stay.
In the morning, we’ll sail across the highest navigable lake in the world, Titicaca, where we’ll visit the Uros community on their islands: a group of floating islands formed from reeds, inhabited by indigenous people known as the Uros. There, we’ll learn about their traditional culture and way of life. We continue our journey to the capital of the Inca world: Cusco, considered the center of the Andean world and declared a World Heritage Site in 1983. We’ll stay there, where we’ll meet up with the traveling group. Coordination of services for the next day’s departure to the Inca Jungle (optional). We meet with the group traveling by plane to continue the tour together.
This day will be dedicated to a city tour of Cusco and its surroundings, visiting the center of the ancient city of Cusco, the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, the Pukara, Tambomachay, and the Sacsayhuaman fortress. Then, we will begin our journey toward the Sacred Valley of the Incas, visiting the archaeological site of Pisaq, a typical market with picturesque mountain terraces. Through the Urubamba Valley, we continue along the Urubamba River, arriving at Ollantaytambo, one of the most important and best-preserved Inca fortifications, where we will stay. Option: Inka Jungle, the group departs very early for Ollantaytambo, following its respective 4-day/3-night itinerary.
In the morning, we visit the Ollantaytambo Fortress. Then, we continue through part of the Sacred Valley, exploring the Maras salt mines and the Moray archaeological site. It will be a day of further exploration of the fascinating culture of these lands. We return to Cusco, where in the evening, we can enjoy a music and dance show at the Qosqo Native Art Center, which includes our tourist ticket.
Free day to explore the city and its interesting museums, or take optional excursions from Cusco, such as Ausangate, where you can visit the majestic Rainbow Mountain, or Humantay Lagoon, famous for their breathtaking views. We will stay in Cusco. Option: Inca Jungle, arriving at the sacred city of Machu Picchu. Return to Cusco to stay with the rest of the group.
After breakfast, we load our luggage and begin the return trip with much still to see. We can visit the Raqchi archaeological site, stop at Pucará to appreciate its clay crafts, or visit Sillustani, where we can see a large number of chulpas, ancient indigenous tombs. We arrive back in Puno, where we stay.
In the morning, we continue our return journey, revisiting the impressive landscapes we’ve already seen and some surprises we’ve yet to discover. We’ll arrive in the city of Tacna, where we’ll stay.
We’ll travel from Tacna to San Pedro de Atacama. In addition to enjoying the scenery along the way, we’ll be able to walk through its charming streets again. We’ll stay there to prepare for one of the great adventures that still awaits us: the journey to the Uyuni Salt Flats.
From San Pedro, we begin our adventure to the Uyuni Salt Flats. We’ll begin by crossing the Chilean-Bolivian border and boarding a 4×4 vehicle. This day, we’ll visit several attractions with breathtaking views: Laguna Blanca, Laguna Verde, the Salvador Dalí Desert, Polques Hot Springs with their soothing waters, the Morning Sun Geysers, and Laguna Colorada with its beautiful flamingos. At dusk, we’ll arrive at our accommodation: Quetena Chico.
We’ll continue our tour very early, first passing by the Camel Rock or Stone Tree, characteristic formations of the area. We’ll continue through landscapes filled with beautiful flora and fauna that will accompany us along the way, such as the Catal Lagoon and its ravine. We’ll stay in a charming salt hotel.
This day we will finally get to know the largest salt flat in the world, the famous Uyuni Salt Flats. We will arrive very early to enjoy a spectacular sunrise from Incahusi Island, at 3,822 meters above sea level. The island, with its rugged terrain filled with tall cacti, affords us a stunning view of the salt flat, also known as Salar de Tunupa. We will continue exploring the vast desert, with time to take characteristic photos and continue appreciating the views. We will also visit the eyes of the salt flat, with their attractive colors and bubbles. Finally, we will retrace our steps back to head to Quetena Chico, where we will stay.
After breakfast at the hotel, we continue on to Chile. Our vehicle will be waiting at the border to continue our journey to Purmamarca, crossing the Jara Pass again.
We continue our return trip to Ceres, where we’ll stay again. There we can rest and recharge, and return home refreshed.
We will continue our journey to Montevideo early, with breakfast en route, arriving in the early hours of Saturday.
